How to Vet a Forex Broker Before You Fund an Account

A broker review is a verdict on where your money sits and how easily you can get it back. Before the platform features and the welcome bonus, four things decide whether a broker is worth funding at all.

Regulation you can verify

Start with the licence number, not the logo. A genuine authorisation can be checked on the regulator's own register, and the entity named there should match the one taking your deposit. A firm that advertises a top-tier licence but onboards you through an offshore subsidiary is telling you which set of rules actually applies to your account.

Where client money is held

Segregated client accounts and negative-balance protection are the difference between a bad trade and a total loss. Look for an explicit statement that client funds are held separately from the firm's own capital, and confirm which investor-compensation scheme, if any, covers you.

Costs and withdrawals

  • Read the spread and commission table for the instruments you will actually trade, not the headline pair.
  • Check the withdrawal terms: minimums, fees, processing times and any bonus conditions that lock up your balance.
  • Test support with a real question before you deposit.

The red flags

Pressure to deposit quickly, a bonus that blocks withdrawals, and vague answers about regulation are the recurring pattern behind complaints. A broker that survives all four checks is not guaranteed to be right for you, but one that fails any of them is answering the question for you.
